Beagle Fun
A world of fun and exciting activities await you and your beagle!
Beagle owners can enjoy a wide range of fun activities that celebrate the qualities of the breed. In addition to being a great home companion and walking buddy full of unconditional love, many of our members enjoy breading and showing their beagles. Even if you have not had a dog before, you have probably seen or heard of "dog shows" and may have watched a national dog show like Westminster on television. It is easy to get the impression that a dog show is just a beauty pageant for purebred dogs, but that is far from true. Both mixed and purebred dogs can be beautiful in their own unique ways. In dog shows, dogs are being judged based on how well they conform to the established standards for their specific breed. That is why we call them conformation shows (conforming to breed standards).
The American Kennel Club (AKC), and its affiliated clubs, like CWBC, sponsor these confirmation shows to promote the quality of the breeds. CWBC usually sponsors at least one or two specialty shows each year, just for Beagles (both13 and 15 inch). The shows are fun to watch and even more fun to actively participate in. If you are interested, they are also a great place to come and learn more about the breed and meet local breeders. But confirmation shows are not the only events available for owners and their beagles to enjoy.
To name just a few, there are things like agility, rally, scent (nose) work, obedience, barn hunt, tracking and more. Participating in these sports are another way you can enjoy and bond with your beagle - and they love it. They also allow your beagle to use the skills they were bred to excel in. For example, as scent hounds, beagles use those abilities to search for specific hidden scents. The dog's handler gets to know their dog, searching behavior and recognize when it has located the hidden scent.
Columbia Willamette Beagle Club members take part in a wide variety of sports and activities and we try to offer educational events to give our members and their beagles the opportunity to learn more and explore the possibilities.
